Week 18 and your baby is totally active in your belly now! And you are almost half way through your pregnancy.

Don’t you want to know how much your baby has grown? Now he/she must be around 14cm long and would be weighing nearly 200g. The little darling will be the size of that of a bell pepper now.

Their nerves will now be forming a protective covering of myelin which is vital for their nervous system to develop and function properly after birth.

The baby is now using your belly as quite a little activity gym by this week and doing a whole lot of kicking, tossing and tumbling about. Now that they have formed a grip, they will be taking hold of their umbilical cord too. If you are having a small girl, she will already be producing eggs in her ovaries at 18 weeks.

The genitals of your baby will now be formed and in place, and if you’re having a little boy they might be visible during your anomaly scan approximately by week 20, although it might not be possible at times due the positioning of the baby.

  • By week 18, your baby will be flexing its arms and legs.
  • The ears of the baby will be in position and would stand out from her head.

Crown to rump, your baby is around 5 and a half inches long, and he/she will weigh nearly 7 ounces, which is just about the size of a bell pepper. You will start noticing more and more of his movements by this week. His/her blood vessels will be visible through his/her thin skin, and the ears are now in their final position, though they’re still standing out from his head a tad. A protective shielding of myelin is starting to form around his nerves, which is a process that will extend upto a year after he’s born. If you’re having a baby girl, then her uterus and fallopian tubes will be formed and in place. If you’re having a baby boy, his genitals will be noticeable now, but he may hide them from you during an ultrasound.

How Big is Your Baby This Week?

The baby will now be the size of a sweet potato—and its small fingers now have unique fingerprints!

Baby’s Length: The length of the baby will be around 5.59 inches.

Baby’s Weight: The baby will weigh around 6.70 oz.

How your life’s changing

You will now have an increase in your appetite. You will observe cravings for specific foods. Make yours count by opting meals and snacks that are loaded with nutrients rather than empty calories. Larger, more comfortable clothes are a necessity now as your baby grows and your waistline increases.

Your cardiovascular system is experiencing dramatic developments, and during this trimester your blood pressure will apparently be lower than usual. Don’t jump up too quick from a lying or sitting position or you might feel a little dizzy.

The best thing you could do is to lie on your side or at least slightly tilted to one side. As you lie flat on your back, the uterus can compress an important vein, leading to reduced blood return to your heart. Try keeping a pillow behind you or under your hip or upper leg for support.

You might need to do the ultrasound if you havent done it yet. This is a painless procedure which aids your doctor or midwife to monitor how your baby is growing, check for certain birth defects, screen the placenta and umbilical cord, find out whether the due date you’re working with is correct, and determine how many babies you’re carrying. During the ultrasound test, you might even find your baby moving around or perhaps sucking its thumb.
